When books are updated, expanded, or modified, they are issued as new editions.

As mentioned before, information can be transmitted in a variety of formats.

Books
are usually are published a single time. The publication is considered an edition. Most books are first editions. Books can be republished. If there are no changes, it is the same book, and it is said to have been reprinted. When books are updated, expanded, or modified, they are issued as new editions.

Sometimes, the book will include edition information on its cover, as this one does.

First published in 1988, the 2nd edition appeared in 1995. This 3rd edition was published in 2000.

If the edition statement does not appear on the book's cover (and it usually does not), check the title page, or the back of the title page (called the title page verso). The edition statement will also appear in any detailed description of a book, e.g., in a bookstore listing or in a library catalog.

P.S. If you are into making films, Cabrillo College Library has this book! One happy reader said: "A must-have...just in case you don't have a billionaire uncle or aren't one of Spielberg's kids."

Books are good sources for in-depth exploration of ideas. This book, for example, would have much more information about making feature films than would a magazine article. However, a magazine article about the very latest techniques would have more current information than the book would offer. For current information, you turn to periodicals.
