Physical arrangement -- System used to arrange materials on the shelves

Cabrillo College Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System to physically organize its collections of books and videorecordings.

The classification system uses an alphanumeric code, referred to as a call number. Call numbers group materials on similar topics together. At the same time, call numbers identify the exact physical location of items on the shelves.

Here are examples of parts of the classification scheme for Sociology

HM 401-1281 is for sociology in general

Within that span:

  • HM 435-477 is for the history of sociology and sociology theory
  • HM 701 is for social systems
  • HM 831-901 is for social change

Check it out for yourself!!

Click through to look at the Library of Congress Classification System. Select a subject area to investigate. Click through to look at how letters and numbers are assigned to cover various subject areas. (You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have it, you can get it free from Adobe.)

Go to the Bulletin Board* for this class. Click on Put in your name, and then write a response to the following question (100 words minimum):

Books in this library, and in most academic libraries in the U.S., are arranged on the shelves using the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. Can you think of a way you could use this system to browse the shelves, in this and other libraries?

*No bulletin board -- the course is offered via WebCT, not through these Web pages.
