"Perplexity is the beginning of knowledge"

--Kahlil Gibran

Research is the gathering of information to answer a question and thereby solve a problem.

Again, What is Research?

It is the process of relying on information transmitted by others, but only YOU will decide how to interpret, evaluate and organize the information.

I have never been to the planet Venus, but I know it exists. Based on the findings of others I know it:

  • is the hottest planet in our solar system
  • has no natural satellites
  • is slightly smaller than Earth (.815)
  • was visited on the same day by a Soviet probe and an American probe
  • is thought to have been formed at the same time and by the same process as Earth

So, What is the Question?

When your teachers ask you to do a research paper, they are asking for more then just a summary of the facts. They want you to recognize a question that is significant to you, something that you want to resolve. And as you search for answers, you will become a researcher in training.

The question a researcher might ask is:

If Earth and Venus are thought to have been formed at the same time and by the same process, why are they so different?
