Library 10 Information Research -- Getting an eBook Account

eBooks are electronic versions of printed books. Since eBooks are online, they are available at your convenience -- anywhere, anytime.

Using eBooks from Cabrillo College campus computers (Aptos and Watsonville) is seamless and easy. No passwords or usernames are necessary.

To use eBooks from home:

1. From the library homepage, choose Fulltext Articles. After entering your library card barcode number you may select the "Electronic Books from NetLibrary." This takes you to a search screen. Searching by Keyword or Full Text will find titles that are available in the Cabrillo eBook collection.

Or,

2. When you find an eBook through the catalog and want to read it, you need to have your own password and username which you created WHILE you were on campus. You need to create your password from a campus computer (in Aptos or Watsonville). Go to the NetLibrary Web site at http://www.netlibrary.com and click on create an account (lower right side of the screen). After creating an account from an on-campus computer you can use the eBooks from anyplace, anytime.

To find an eBook:

1. Search the library catalog. eBooks are integrated into the catalog. A typical catalog search will result in lists of books with call numbers which are available on the shelf in the library as well as eBooks which can be read on any computer. When the book you want has a live link within the record, you can click through to NetLibrary and read the content of the book by choosing to browse this book online.

Or,

2. Choose Fulltext Articles from the library homepage. Key in your library card barcode number for remote authentication. Then choose Electronic Books from NetLibrary.

Or

3. Go to the NetLibrary website at http://www.netlibrary.com and sign in with the username and password you created from a campus workstation (either Aptos or Watsonville). Searching by Keyword or Full Text will retrieve those titles which are in the Cabrillo College eBook collection.


To use / read an eBook:

  1. After deciding to browse an eBook online you can read through the table of contents on the left side of the screen. You can also plunge right in and read sections of the book, page by page, using the arrow keys. There is a built-in American Heritage English Language Dictionary to use for definitions, and an audio component pronounces the word out loud.
  2. To see the definition, highlight any word in the text and then click on the dictionary tab on the left side of the screen. The text portion of the screen (what you are reading) can be enlarged if you click on the "Hide Tools" button at the top. When you are finished with an eBook, please click on the "Close eBook" button at the top.
