Snowboarding

How big a winter sport is snowboarding? How dangerous is it? What are the most common injuries? A recent study claims that snowboarding is more dangerous than skiing--most injuries are to wrists and ankles, but head injuries are a growing concern (White, 50). Langran writes that snowboarder numbers, which grew phenomenly in the 1990s, have peaked; estimates are that snowboarders now make up 20%-25% of users of ski areas. Despite the risks, the enthusiasts are, well, enthusiastic. As Rob Reicherfeld and Anna Bruechert put it: "No matter what your age or level, a host of wonderful experiences awaits you. Happy tracks to all snowboaders!" (128).
