Image Files/Graphics/Multimedia  Many sites make pictures and images available for free.  On other sites, there are use restrictions, or fees.  Except for Corbis, the image sites listed below make their images available free for non-commercial use.  If ever in doubt, contact the Web site to inquire about restrictions or to gain specific permission. download.com  Can search for specific tools. Or, click on a category, e.g., development tools
Scour.net Audio players; video players, etc.
WorkTracker (free trial, then fee-based) and Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool -- both help you identify the terms people actually use in searching. Use these services to hone in on words and phrases to use in your metatags.

Google analytics! -- "Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site."

Free Email
A variety of free Web-based email services are available.  Check out Free Email Address Directory, which claims to list over 700 free email providers!  Over the last several years, some free email services have seemed to come and go with dizzying speed.  The ones listed below appear to be well-established by now and stable. All provide ways of sending,  receiving, and filing email.  They will vary in other "bells and whistles" provided.

Free Web Page Hosting Frequently these days, you have a place to publish your Web pages where you work, or your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may provide you with Web space.   If, however, you want to experiment with free Web space, here are some resources to explore. Some (e.g., FortuneCity and GeoCities) provide "neighborhoods," allowing you to post your site near others of like theme or focus.
Check on file size limits, and other restrictions. Most include some kind of advertising, e.g., at GeoCities, a GeoCities frame pops up when someone visits your homepage; the homepage is "signed" GeoCities at the bottom right

Identify additional services that offer free Web page hosting by using Internet search engines.

  1. Be on the Cabrillo College Library homepage    http://libwww.cabrillo.cc.ca.us
  2. Click on Search the Internet
  3. Select a search engine and search on a phrase such as "free Web hosting"

Free Message Boards and Forums  Many carry advertising. An extremely easy one to set up is QuickTopic. In my experience, people really enjoy posting messages, then reading what they and others have posted, and learning in the process.  Identify additional services that offer free message boards and forums by using Internet search engines.
  1. Be on the Cabrillo College Library homepage    http://libwww.cabrillo.cc.ca.us
